Natural characteristics

Vražje Lake is of glacial origin, formed by glaciation during the last Ice Age. It is characterized by dark blue water color, a relatively large surface area and a regular circular shape, best visible from the air. Its depth reaches up to 11 meters, and it is surrounded by gentle pastures and open landscape, which makes it special compared to other Durmitor lakes located in dense forests.

Nearby is also located Fish lake, with which it often forms a natural unit in tourist tours.

Biodiversity and Fishing

Although relatively cold and mountainous, Vražje Lake is rich in fish. Sport fishing is permitted in accordance with National Park regulations, from May to October. Fishing is only allowed with a daily permit obtained from park rangers. Angling is permitted with one rod only and exclusively with artificial bait. The most commonly caught species are trout, zlatovčica and graylingand the “catch and release” principle is recommended to help preserve the ecosystem.

Activities and tourism

Vražje Lake is suitable for various forms of active recreation:

  • Tandem paragliding: Flying over the Jezerska plateau, including Vražje Lake, is one of the most exciting adventures on Durmitor. The flight lasts about 15–20 minutes on average, while the entire experience takes around an hour.
  • Mountain biking: The lake is part of the scenic route "Durmitor Ring", as well as several local cycling trails connecting Žabljak with the surrounding plateaus and lakes. Bicycles can be rented from tourist agencies or local accommodation providers.
  • Hiking and picnics: Thanks to its flat terrain and panoramic views, this area is ideal for walks, picnics, and easy excursions.

The lake lacks developed tourist infrastructure such as hospitality facilities, but it is precisely this untouched nature and silence that contribute to its authenticity.

Cultural and Historical Significance

In the immediate vicinity of the lake, there are two necropolises with stećci – medieval tombstones unique to the region of Southeast Europe. Since 2016, these sites have been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The stećci are richly decorated with motifs of crosses, figures, and geometric shapes, and their presence reflects the historical settlement and spiritual importance of this area.
