Durmitor is a mountain and a national park in Montenegro. The highest peak is Bobot's hip 2,523 meters high. The name Durmitor is thought to come from the Celtic words "dru mi tore" meaning "water under the stone." The regions of Durmitor, a rare and authentic work of nature due to their beauty and unspoiled nature, were declared a National Park in 1952. Located in the northwest of Montenegro, the Park includes the main massif of Durmitor with canyons of TaraDarling and Sušice and the upper part of the canyon valley Mosquito nets, zauzimajući površinu od 39.000 ha.

The magnificence of the landscape is contributed, in addition to the beauty of the lake basin and the sparkling water surface, by the vast forest area that surrounds it and the peak of Međeda, towering above it. The forests occupy a relatively small area, but some of them are true rarities of nature, such as the black pine forest in the Crna poda locality, whose grandiose trees up to 50 m in height have stood the test of time for a full 450 years. Of the 1,325 flora species of Durmitor and the surrounding canyons, as many as 900 species belong to the high mountain flora (above 1,500 masl). Endemics make up 15% of the total high mountain flora, which counts 122 species, while compared to the entire endemic flora of the Durmitor massif, as many as 77% are high mountain endemics. On the entire massif of Durmitor, the large height range and different habitats have resulted in an extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna. Vast forests, open pastures, cliffs, Durmitor peaks, abundance of lakes are important for the existence and wealth of animal life. A chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) can appear in the field of view of a patient observer in the area of high mountain pastures and rocky fields, and the presence of a blind dog is considered a rarity.

Among the most beautiful decorations of the Park are the clear, powerful rivers that gave this area magnificent canyon valleys. The Tara River is particularly impressive, both with the beauty and movement of its waters, as well as with the depth and landscape of the canyon, making it one of the most beautiful in the world. Durmitor National Park abounds with a significant number of cultural monuments from the ancient period to the most recent era. The most characteristic are the medieval monuments: ruins of cities and fortifications, bridges and watchtowers, necropolises and monastery complexes in the valley of the Tara river. All the splendor of the natural beauty, ambient and cultural values of Durmitor and the Tara River prevailed for Durmitor National Park to be included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, by the decision of the International Committee for World Cultural and Natural Heritage, in Paris in 1980, while the Tara River and its canyon valley, included in the world ecological biosphere reserves in 1977 by UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere program. The Tara Canyon, as a unique phenomenon due to its depth of 1,000, and in places 1,300 m, ranks right behind the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in the USA.. On the part of its course through the Durmitor National Park, the Tara River has an average drop of 3.6 m/km , so beech trees and rapids are formed, which complete the ambiance of untouched nature with their beauty.

Sedam područja Nacionalnog parka Durmitor se nalazi pod posebnim režimom zaštite i specificni su: prašuma smrče i jele u slivu Mlinskog potoka, kompleks crnog bora na Crnim podima u kanjonu Tare, Black Lake sa šumom u neposrednoj blizini, dolina Škrčkih  jezera i uže područje kanjona Sušice, Barno lake sa najbližom okolinom, Lake Zaboj sa okruženjem i uža kanjonska dolina rijeke Tare.
