On Đurđević Tara, Danube Day was celebrated
(July 29, 2019) Today, the Day of the Danube Basin was celebrated for the second time in a row in Montenegro, on Đurđevića Tara. This event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Montenegro in cooperation with the Žabljak Tourist Organization. This year, Danube Day is particularly important because it marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Protection of the Danube River in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1994.
The Danube Day is an integral part of the cooperation of the Danube countries and is celebrated in all fourteen countries that are signatories to the International Convention on the Protection of the Danube, in order to raise awareness for the preservation of the river among as many individuals as possible and to appeal to the rational use of water resources.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Montenegro decided to organize the International Day for the Protection of the Danube Basin in the canyon of the Tara River with the aim of educating the youngest through play and thus sending a message to the public about the importance of protecting and preserving rivers as living habitats, as well as the need for rational use of water resources.
In countries across Europe, the initiator of the Danube Day celebration is the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, whose mission is to promote and coordinate sustainable and integral water management, including the protection, improvement and rational use of water.
Primary and secondary school students from Žabljak took part in the celebration of this date, who presented the Tara river and its importance with their artistic expression. In addition to this event, the planned action to clean the bed of the Tara River was postponed to August, due to very bad weather conditions.
In addition to the representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Montenegro and the Tourism Organization of Žabljak, the importance of this event was recognized by the National Parks of Montenegro, as well as tourism entrepreneurs.
