Fish lake
Riblje jezero is one of 18 glacial lakes located in the Durmitor National Park, at altitudes above 1,500 meters. Located in a valley known as the "Greek side", at an altitude of 1,409 meters above sea level, this lake stands out for its authentic beauty and peaceful atmosphere. It is only 500 meters from Devil's Lake, and about 10 kilometers from the town of Žabljak, making it an easily accessible, but extremely valuable natural destination.
The lake is of glacial origin, with a maximum depth of about 5.5 meters. Due to the wealth of fish stocks after which it was named, Riblje jezero is a favorite place for nature lovers and recreational fishing.
Cultural and historical value: Novaković stećci
About 200 meters northwest of Riblje Lake, in the hamlet of Novakovići, there is a medieval necropolis known as the Greek necropolis. It is located on a gentle hill overlooking the Durmitor massif, and belongs to the contact zone of the National Park.
In an area of about 500 m², 49 stećak tombstones oriented in an east-west direction have been registered, of which 10 are slabs, 27 are chests and 12 are roof tombstones. Various decorations and symbols are present on 22 of the monuments, such as stylized crosses, shields, figures of men with swords, as well as hunting scenes. Although there are no inscriptions, it is assumed that prominent individuals from the wider area were buried here, in the period from the 14th to the 16th centuries.
The Novakovići tombstones are made of white-gray limestone and are part of the common cultural heritage of the people of this region. As such, they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.
Natural environment and accessibility
The surroundings of Riblje Lake are rich in medicinal herbs, untouched vegetation and authentic landscapes that reflect all the characteristics of Durmitor's nature. Thanks to its accessibility and preserved nature, the location is suitable for day trips, easy hiking and educational visits, especially in the context of cultural and natural interpretation.
