Fish lake

Fish Lake is one of 18 glacial lakes located in Durmitor National Park, situated at an altitude of 1,409 meters in the valley known as "Grčka strana" ("Greek Side"). It is known for its authentic beauty and peaceful atmosphere, located only 500 meters from Vražje lake, and about 10 kilometers from the town of Žabljak, making it an easily accessible yet exceptionally valuable natural destination.

The lake is of glacial origin, with a maximum depth of about 5.5 meters. Known for its abundant fish population, from which it gets its name, Fish Lake is a favorite spot for nature lovers and recreational anglers.

Cultural and Historical Value: Novaković Stećci

About 200 meters northwest of Riblje Lake, in the hamlet of Novakovići, there is a medieval necropolis known as the Greek Necropolis. It is located on a gentle elevation overlooking the Durmitor massif and belongs to the contact zone of the National Park.

Within an area of approximately 500 m², 49 stećci tombstones have been registered, oriented east-west, including 10 slabs, 27 chests, and 12 gabled tombstones. Twenty-two of the monuments bear various decorations and symbols such as stylized crosses, shields, figures of men with swords, and hunting scenes. Although there are no inscriptions, it is assumed that prominent individuals from the wider area were buried here between the 14th and 16th centuries.

The stećci from Novakovići are made of white-gray limestone and are part of the shared cultural heritage of the peoples from this region. As such, they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.

Natural environment and accessibility

The surroundings of Riblje Lake abound with medicinal herbs, untouched vegetation, and authentic landscapes that reflect all the characteristics of Durmitor’s nature. Thanks to its accessibility and well-preserved nature, the location is suitable for day trips, easy hiking walks, and educational visits, especially in the context of cultural and natural interpretation.
