European Day of the Danube Basin on the Tara River - DANUBE DAY, a campaign to clean up the Tara River

The Day of the Danube Basin is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and in cooperation with the Tourist Organization Žabljak. Danube Day is an integral part of the cooperation of the Danube countries and is celebrated in all fourteen countries that are signatories to the International Convention on the Protection of the Danube, in order to raise awareness for the preservation of rivers among as many individuals as possible and to appeal to the rational use of water resources.

In countries across Europe, the initiator of the Danube Day celebration is the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, whose mission is to promote and coordinate sustainable and integral water management, including the protection, improvement and rational use of water.

The idea of the ICPDR is that this celebration will eventually grow into an international festival that would unite over 81 million inhabitants of the countries of the Danube basin of different cultures, ways of life and understanding of the river.

Danube Basin Day has become the largest river festival in the world, with large riverside festivals and public gatherings, as well as educational events. It is also a basin-wide celebration that reflects the diversity of the region. At the international level, coordination is carried out by the Secretariat of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR).

For the second time in a row, the Day of the Danube Basin is celebrated in Montenegro on July 29, 2019, on Đurđevića Tara. The Danube Basin Day event in Montenegro is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in cooperation with the Žabljak Tourism Organization. At the international level, coordination is carried out by the International Organization for the Protection of the Danube River.

In addition, in all Danube countries, in cooperation with the Regional Partnership of the Global Water Partnership for Central and Eastern Europe (GWP CEE), an international school creativity competition "Danube Artist" is held during the Danube Day. Within the said competition, young people from 14 countries were invited to create works of art inspired by rivers and their surroundings. The international winner will be announced in the fall.

Danube Day celebrates the Danube and the rivers that flow into it, as well as their vital role in providing water, food, electricity, recreation and livelihoods. However, this year Danube Day is particularly important because it marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Protection of the Danube River in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1994.

TO Žabljak, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, celebrates the International Day for the Protection of the Danube Basin in the Tara River Canyon on July 29 with the aim of educating the youngest through play and thus sending a message to the public about the importance of protecting and preserving river habitats, as well as the need for rational use water resources. Choosing the location to mark this manifestation was not difficult because the Tara River is on the list of protected areas and is certainly an integral part of the Danube Basin and as a natural asset of special value it is necessary to protect it.

Institutions and associations from Montenegro, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine - the signatory countries of the Danube Declaration, marked the Day of the Danube Basin with symbolic activities in 2018. like a riverside festival.
