Devil's Lake

Devil's Lake is located on the Lake Plateau of the Durmitor National Park, about 12 kilometers southwest of Žabljak, along the old road to Nikšić. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,411 meters, this lake is one of the most attractive glacial lakes on Durmitor, and thanks to its easy accessibility, it is an increasingly popular destination for lovers of nature, sports, and cultural and historical heritage.

Natural features

The Devil's Lake is of glacial origin, formed by the effects of glaciation during the last ice age. It is characterized by dark blue water, with a relatively large surface area and a regular circular shape, which is best visible from the air. Its depth reaches up to 11 meters, while it is surrounded by gentle pastures and open countryside, which makes it special compared to other Durmitor lakes located in dense forests.

Nearby is also Fish lake, with which it often forms a natural whole in tourist tours.

Biodiversity and fishing

Although relatively cold and mountainous, Vražje Lake is rich in fish. Sport fishing is permitted in accordance with the rules of the National Park, from May to October. Fishing is only possible with a daily permit, which can be obtained from the park ranger. Fishing is permitted with one rod and only with the use of artificial bait. The most common species that can be caught are troutgoldenchiabout i grayling, and the "catch and release" principle is recommended in order to preserve the ecosystem.

Activities and tourism

Devil's Lake is suitable for various forms of active vacation:

  • Tandem paragliding: Flying over the Jezera Plateau, including Devil's Lake, is one of the most exciting adventures on Durmitor. The flight lasts an average of 15–20 minutes, and the entire experience takes about an hour.
  • Mountain biking: The lake is part of the panoramic route "Durmitor Ring", as well as several local cycling trails that connect Žabljak with the surrounding plateaus and lakes. Bicycles can be rented at tourist agencies or local accommodation providers.
  • Hiking and picnics: Thanks to the flat terrain and the panoramic view, this area is ideal for walks, picnics and light excursions.

The lake does not have a developed tourist infrastructure such as catering facilities, but that is exactly it untouched nature and silence contribute to its authenticity.

Cultural and historical significance

Since 2016, these sites have been located on UNESCO World Heritage List.
